A Simple Mindset Shift To Get Out Of Debt

Oct 11, 2025

How a Simple Mindset Shift Is Helping Me Get Out Of Debt.

I used to think I was just unlucky. That good things happened to other people, that opportunities just didn’t come my way. But here’s the truth: opportunities to make and grow money were everywhere, I just couldn’t see them.

Hi, it’s your friend Eva, and let me be crystal clear: I’m not talking about manifesting a bag of cash or repeating “I am wealthy” into the mirror 10 times a day.

I’m talking about something practical. Shifting your mindset.

For the longest time, my money mindset was basically:

  • “I’ll never make enough.”
  • “I’m just bad with money.”
  • “People like me don’t invest.”

So, guess what? I didn’t try as hard as I could have. I didn’t ask questions. I didn’t learn. I didn’t take chances. And yeah, nothing really changed.

Maybe you’re in that space right now.

  • You’re tired.
  • You feel stuck.
  • You keep seeing other people getting opportunities, jobs, side hustles, relationships, and you’re thinking, “Why not me?”

It’s not because you’re lazy or because you don’t deserve it. It’s because your brain is wired to filter out anything that doesn’t match what you believe.

The turning point

My shift happened one afternoon when I was going over my bank statement and credit card statements and grumbling to myself that there’s just no way out of this.

My mindset was so focused on everything that was going wrong. How it wasn’t my fault. I’m a victim in all of this. Even if it was all true, so what. Seriously, so what. It may not be my fault but it’s still my responsibility.

Because of the negative mindset, I couldn’t even see the tiny chances right in front of me.

So, I made a deal with myself: I’d stop assuming “it won’t work,” and instead ask, “What if it does?” Those tiny questions cracked the door open.

It was that simple. Not magical thinking. Just being willing to look for possibilities instead of problems.

What changed

And let me tell you, things started to shift.

  • I found free classes that helped me learn new skills.
  • I started my YouTube channel, even though I was terrified. I wasn’t 100% all in with YouTube until I got monetized. Then suddenly it was like wait a minute, people are tuning in? Keep in mind I’ve made about $240 in 5 months. Now I’m all in with it. I’ve gotten so much joy from it. I’ve learned so much about content creation.

And no, it didn’t all click overnight. But suddenly, instead of feeling like life was happening to me, I felt like I was participating in it. Then came my contract jobs.

I was texting with a friend. She mentioned her company needed someone for a project. It’s in my skill set, so I said yes. Prior to my mindset shift, I wonder if I would have said yes. Would insecurity take over, negative self-talk, all those horrible things. But I pushed those thoughts out of my head and said yes. Then there was another project after that.

Suddenly I had a bit of confidence. I’ve been reaching out to other people I know and letting them know I’m available. Companies are not hiring but there’s still things that need to be done. I have an HR compliance background. So it’s perfect. At the rate it’s going, I can be out of debt by next year. Yeah I’m really busy but I have debt that’s crushing me, so to quote Gen X – suck it up, rub some dirt into it, walk it off, if you’re thirsty, the hose is over there.

I also spend 9 to 12 hours a week commuting. Now I earn money instead of playing sudoku. Although I still start my commute with the NY Times games.

Their new belief

Here’s what I want you to know: shifting your money mindset doesn’t mean you’re delusional or ignoring reality. Mindset shifts don’t have to be big or complicated. They don’t mean pretending everything is perfect.

It’s just about nudging your brain to stop filtering out opportunities. About asking yourself, “What if this could work for me?”

Because when you believe something might be possible, you actually start noticing ways to make it happen.

Here’s your challenge for this week, yes I’m giving you homework.
Catch yourself the next time you think, “That’s not for me,” or “I can’t do that,” and ask instead, “What if I could?”

It doesn’t cost you anything to think that way and it might open the door to something that changes everything.

Because opportunities to earn, save, and grow your money are out there, but you’ve got to be willing to see them.
